RAS are proud to sponsor the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum Trust Limited

We support their goals to inform, educate and inspire us all about the crucial role played by chemistry in the world around us and the unique heritage of the chemical industry in the north-west.

Catalyst Museum

The Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum makes science exciting and accessible to people of all ages, with a range of interactive exhibits and events.

As part of our sponsorship we have adopted an element on their periodic table:

Neptunium
Named after the planet and the Greek god of water and the sea, this element symbolises power and strength – but not as you expect it!

We chose Neptunium because it is a fairly recent discovery and named after the furthest planet in our solar system. It is unusual because it is innovative, unexpected, and in small amounts is very powerful – just like us.

The symbol for the Element is Np – which is also in memory of one our team members, Dr Nick Pumphrey, who died in 2015 at the age of 77. We remember Dr Nick Pumphrey as one of the cleverest chemists the country has seen, and we still miss his energy, knowledge and passion to support and encourage future generations into working in industrial chemistry. He spent most of his career with ICI ChlorChemicals and worked with us for over 17 years in his retirement until his death.

Neptunium also has an atomic number of 93 which aligns with the year our company was founded 1993, celebrating our history.
